‘We got our girl’ June 7, 2025
My husband and I bought our house in December of 2022, and we always had the intention of adding a dog to our family.
We wanted to wait until spring or summer so we had time to settle into the new place before adding any chaos to our life, but a month later, I was dragging my husband through the doors of the Nebraska Humane Society.
We weren’t sure if we’d connect with any dog, and my husband assured me that we weren’t getting a dog.We walked the hallways and somebody immediately caught our eye. Her name was Seesaw, a white lab mix of some sort who looked at us and immediately rolled over as close as she could get to the barrier. She had the silliest personality and I knew leaving her would break my heart. She was magnetic.
I figured my husband would say it was time to go soon, but instead, he knelt down next to her and asked “How do we adopt her?”
We did the paperwork and waited anxiously, making plans for a shopping trip to set her up with everything she’d need, but our hopes to take her home that day were let down as the staff told us she may have kennel cough and couldn’t go anywhere. They said, if she had kennel cough, it’d be anywhere from a week to two for her to be ready to go.
We went to lunch afterward and we couldn’t talk about anything else. So, the next day while on my break at work, I checked the website for the 40th time just in case. I missed a page while I was clicking through, and something told me to check it, even though it had only been a day. I go back, scrolling slowly to make sure I don’t miss anything, and at the bottom of the page I found her. It took my husband 30 minutes from the phone call to get to the humane society, and after about an hour, I got the text: “We got our girl.”
I couldn’t wait for my shift to end, but when I got home and saw her relaxing on the couch with her new toys, I couldn’t believe how lucky we were. Her name is Milli now, and she is the best thing that ever happened to us. Her favorite things are swimming in her grandma’s lake with the catfish that she can never seem to catch, but she tries really hard to. She loves walks and spins in circles when she hears her leash jingle. She has a little black lab brother now, Don (we did name them after Don and Millie’s intentionally) and she loves to teach him about life and all of her favorite things have become his too. We just can’t believe how lucky we are, and we know Milli chose us rather than the other way around.
We’re so thankful for the Nebraska Humane Society for their help in bringing our girl home; our lives wouldn’t be the same without her.”
