‘There for me through all the ups and downs’ June 27, 2025

Benny the one-eyed cat sitting in a cat bed

“I first saw Benny at NHS on Sept. 14, 2019.

When walking up to his kennel, you immediately noticed the hot pink stitches lining where his right eye would be. His chart indicated that he was 10 years old and came in as a stray. The vet staff ended up having to remove his eye due to damage it sustained, likely in a fight.

The next day I went back after convincing my dog-loving parents to let me take him home. Benny was the first animal I ever personally adopted. His spunk (and obsession with food) quickly became apparent. Benny saw me through the remainder of high school, throughout college, and we even moved out of my parents’ house together. He was there for me through all the ups and downs of navigating adulthood.

Unfortunately, Benny’s health took a turn for the worse in the summer of 2024, and I had to say goodbye to my best friend. I miss him every day and truly feel like I lost a part of myself.

Benny inspired my love for the animals that often get overlooked. So, when I feel like I am ready to adopt another animal, I will be leaning toward an older and/or disabled individual.

I’ll always be so thankful to NHS for bringing me my one-eyed wonder.”
