‘The most joyful BFF’ May 11, 2025

Dogs with a bride and groom

I adopted George (NHS George) in 2006 when I was a 19-year-old college student. He was the first dog I had on my own, and we fell in love immediately.

I quickly learned he had some significant separation anxiety. It was beyond stressful, but when he wasn’t destroying my room while I was gone, he was the most joyful BFF. I committed to getting him the help he needed, and after a lot of training and time and trial and error, I found out having my boyfriend’s dog, Larry, around was the magic cure. George taught me a lot of patience and sparked my interest in dog behavior, leading to my boyfriend-now-husband and I getting our first foster dog my senior year of college.

A year later we moved to Texas and volunteered at our local shelter, walking and training dogs while we continued fostering. When we returned to Nebraska in 2016, the first thing we did was sign up to volunteer at NHS. We’ve welcomed many fosters and relish our Tuesday night dog walking shift.

George died in 2022 at 17 years old. We had 15 incredible years together. Thank you to NHS for bringing us together. You helped me discover my passion for helping dogs and the people who love them!”
