‘Taught us so much about love’ July 9, 2025

Trix the senior dog cuddling with his owner

“My son had been begging me to get a dog for years. I didn’t want a dog, but I finally gave in and agreed but told him we had to wait until summer because I didn’t want to potty train a puppy in the winter.

My 7 year old son said “I don’t want a puppy, I want to adopt a dog from the shelter.” So, on Mother’s Day – May 9, 2010, we went to the Nebraska Humane Society and walked the kennels. We saw a couple we liked, but the staff said they weren’t a good fit for kids.

They sat us in a room and picked out a couple dogs that would be better. I don’t remember anything about the first dog, but the second dog was a chocolate lab. He was calm and sweet. When my son threw treats, he caught them in his mouth. They took him back to his kennel, and I asked my son what he thought. He said “I really like that dog that does tricks!” I said “OK, let’s get him”. And my son was in disbelief like “What?! Are you serious? We can take him home?!?” And then he started crying.

He said he was just so happy to get that dog that he couldn’t stop crying. His name was Buddy at the shelter, but my son changed it to Trix – because he did tricks, but he wanted it spelled like the cereal. I mean, the kid was only 7 lol.

Trix was my son’s best friend for almost 10 years. He became paralyzed due to a spinal stroke after 7 years and watching him adapt to that life and learning to care for him taught us so much about love and what truly amazing creatures dogs are.”
