‘Some of the coolest animals I’ve worked with’ April 26, 2025

“I’ve been working at NHS for over a decade. In that time, I have seen the worst of humanity, and the best. Today, though, I want to highlight “the best,” and one of my favorite parts of working at NHS – working with exotic and other unique animals.

I am so fortunate to have had the opportunity to care for and experience such extraordinary animals over the years. If you’ve ever wondered if the exotic animals that come to NHS have someone there that cares for and understands them, I can assure you, they absolutely do. So many of my coworkers at NHS, me included, have an office full of critters, including snakes, tarantulas, geckos, lizards, guinea pigs and fish.

I also want to shout out the Henry Doorly Zoo, for always having our back if an animal comes in that’s a little too exotic for us!

Another fun part of the job also includes educating kids on how awesome reptiles can be. It’s so much fun coming to Camp Kindness each summer and watching the kids’ faces light up when I bring out one of my snakes or tarantulas. I’m including some of the coolest animals I’ve worked with over the years. Yes, there is a cat, but it’s brown, and therefore it’s super cool!

Photos attached include: a blue and gold macaw, a tegu, a brown kitten, a childrens python, a cockatoo, a corn snake, a hognose at Camp Kindness, a hyacinth macaw, an iguana at Humane Hands, a savannah Monitor, a wolf hybrid and a boa. All animals pictured were adopted or went to a sanctuary!”
