‘Soft, caring and patient’ June 15, 2025

“Shortly after my dad got diagnosed with cancer in 2014, we thought it would be a good idea to get him his own dog for company; despite him disagreeing.

We went to NHS and after turning the halfway point there was this mini schnauzer that was barking his little face off. He was the perfect size and we knew he likely was just stressed out from the kennels, so we filled out the papers to see him. I don’t even remember if we saw any other dogs, we just remember him being perfect and quiet once he was in the rooms, just like he’d be every day after.

We took him home to meet my dad who was initially grumpy, but after 20 years of “family” pets, he was happy to have one as his own. We named him Hodor after the Game of Thrones character.

He was soft, caring, and patient; he helped my dad and the rest of us through bad days and got to see good ones too. Hodor was about seven when we adopted him, so while it’s bittersweet my dad outlived his chemo dog, I truly believe him keeping my dad company helped keep him around.”
