‘So many memories, people, animals’ April 19, 2025
“Oh, where to start? In 2002 I submitted my volunteer application, and once accepted by the incomparable Sally Zachary, I never looked back.
So many memories, so many people, so many animals (a lot of which ended up in our house). I was blessed to learn from some of the best cat and dog behaviorists, to help with many events, the aftermath of cruelty seizures (how much fun was it to look for fish in black water in tanks that would give you an electric shock if you touched the edges? ask me, I can tell you).
Deep cleaning adoption kennels with the most dedicated volunteer crew ever. Excursions on the P.A.W. Receiving animals (and people) from Hurricane Katrina. Redoing the lobby floor, again and again. Covid protocols. Fostering kittens. Fostering many Shelties and Chihuahuas, some of which became much loved family members. Oh – watching Judy Varner command a literal herd of border collies with one word. Learning about greyhounds from Joanne Bednarz.
Pam and Baxter. Baxter was a godsend in the long months after I lost my son, as were all the staff and volunteers.
I found my heart dog there, my beloved Gordie – the first of six we took in from the shelter, as well as four cats/kittens. We had our beloved and much missed Clyde from the time he was two weeks old as a foster.
And then, the much anticipated renovation. I had tears in my eyes when I first walked in and saw the new space – it was everything I could have imagined. And seeing the Cat Alley sign still there was the absolute best. I volunteered and worked for NHS, my husband volunteered, my two children volunteered. I really wish we could be there for the celebrations. I’m not saying definitely not, but I don’t know if we can make it work. But know my heart will be there with you all. Congratulations on 150 years and best wishes for 150 more!”
