‘She made me love dogs’ July 6, 2025

Lady the dog sitting in front of her bowl

“On May 9, 2017, my daughter called and said she was adopting a dog. A dog that was ‘old, sick and she didn’t have much time left.’

I told her that she absolutely was not getting a dog, and if she did, she would not be living with us. I had never grown up with dogs (I came from a cat family). Well, she ended up adopting Lady – a Shiba Inu/chow mix. She was very old and skinny.

We were told she was originally a Hurricane Katrina survivor. She had recently been surrendered. Savannah adopted her, and I would not let them live with us.

After about a month or two, Savannah faced some medical problems and needed help, so we took care of Lady. That dog became such a big part of our family and world. We all just fell in love. My husband nursed her back to health and made her home-cooked meals every day. We’d take her to a veterinary ophthalmologist to get her eyes checked because she had issues with her cornea. She was so special to all of us.

My daughter credits Lady with always being there for her and helping her get through some of the hardest times. Lady changed my life also. She made me love dogs and become a huge animal/dog advocate. Because of her, we now have four dogs, and I would take many many more if I could!

Lady taught us all so much, including how to love unconditionally, and that senior dogs are worth rescuing too.

We unfortunately lost Lady on July 12, 2019, to cancer. We think she was 15-16 years old. We still love and miss her. We are very thankful for the short time that we had with this precious senior dog. We hope that she had a wonderful last few years of her life and that she knew how loved and cherished she was.

A reminder that senior dogs need a safe home and someone to love them in their elder years. Always be there for your animals. It is a life long commitment and don’t give up on them when they get old. They still need and love you.

In LOVING memory of our sweet precious Lady!”
