‘She dried many tears’ April 27, 2025

“On Sept. 21, 2010, we were looking for a potential therapy dog to replace the current one who was approaching retirement. We discovered a beautiful mixed breed girl who we named Gia.

She was shy and nervous, but the adoption specialist told us she is scared in the shelter but much better in other settings. We adopted her and brought her home where she lived up to her true personality as soon as she stepped through the door.

Over the course of the next 11 months, she blossomed into a gentle companion who was wise beyond her years. In 2011, she began working at Northeast Elementary School in Glenwood, Iowa. For the next 11 years, she treated each human in her school as a part of her family. She dried many tears, inspired many young emerging readers and shared her unconditional love and acceptance with thousands of students and staff.”
