Feeding
- Do your research on dog foods and ask questions. The quality of your dog food is very important to your dog’s well-being.
- Feed one to two measured meals of premium dog food daily.
- Match food to life stage and activity level.
- Ask your veterinarian for advice on food selection and feeding recommendations.
- Watch for signs of boredom. Bored dogs may overeat if food is always available.
- Use premium treats to reward your dog for good behavior. Treats should not exceed 10% of the dog’s total food intake.
- Table scraps are not good for dogs. Dogs cannot digest human food like we can.
- Discuss canned (wet) versus dry food with your veterinarian to decide the best option for your pet.
- Make sure your dog has access to fresh water daily.
Housing
Dogs are naturally den animals. Provide an indoor kennel and properly train your dog to use it. Your dog will see this as their “safe zone.” Be sure their kennel is around the area where you spend most of your time. Dogs want to be part of daily activity. Leaving dogs unsupervised outdoors is not recommended as it is unsafe and unhealthy. Never leave your dog tied outside unattended.
