Pet Loss Support Group
Losing a pet can be painful and disruptive to your life, so the Nebraska Humane Society is here to help. We offer a FREE Pet Loss Support Group that meets the first Tuesday of every month from 6:30-7:30 p.m. to help accommodate grieving pet parents. These informal discussion groups are led by Kendra McCallie, who has been a mental health therapist for 25 years. Feel free to stop by once or attend monthly. Reservations are not required. This group meets in the NHS Friends Forever room, which is located inside the door nearest 90th street on the NHS campus, located at 8929 Fort Street. The group is open to the public, so come to share or simply listen. Whatever you choose, we’re here to help with your healing.
Pet Food Pantry
To better serve our community in a more efficient and effective way, the Nebraska Humane Society is changing the process in how our weekly Pet Food Pantry operates. Friday, June 27, 2025, will be our last “scheduled” day of the NHS Pet Food Pantry operating out of the shelter.
Instead, we are going to be redistributing donated pet food to human food pantries across the metro. This will allow us to offer pet food through distribution sites in their own neighborhoods, and more efficiently and effectively serve more families and their pets. Below you will find a list of food pantries across the metro who NHS is partnering with:
- First Presbyterian Church – 216 S. 34th St.
- St. Vincent de Paul – 2101 Leavenworth St.St. Vincent de Paul – 1715 Izard St.

Project Pet Safe

Animeals
Once a month, shelter volunteers load up and deliver free pet food to any senior, with a licensed companion animal, who qualifies for Meals on Wheels. We understand that nurturing pets also nurtures their companions—on many different levels! Ask about Animeals at the Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging when you sign up for Meals on Wheels at 402-444-6766.
Project P.E.T.S
Project PETS (Pet Enhanced Therapy for Seniors) works to adopt pets to area care facilities and nursing homes, to provide residents companionship and unconditional love. Our trainers work with the staff of the facility to find and/or train appropriate pets who are docile, yet social animals, that love attention. Send an email or call 402-905-3472 for more information.
Last Litter
On occasion, NHS will take in litters of puppies or kittens as owner surrenders. Often, these are accidental litters that the owners cannot care for. In order to provide for our community and reduce the constant strain of overpopulation, we offer a last litter program. Through this program, the mother will be spayed free of charge and returned to the owner (microchip transfer and licensing fees still apply). The owner will foster the puppies or kittens until they are old enough to be adopted through NHS. As a foster parent for NHS, we can provide everything you need to take care of the babies until they're ready for adoption. That includes food, litter, vaccinations and deworming. Proof of financial hardship may be requested. Candidates for this program may be declined for any reason. Learn more about foster care
