“On April 8, a kind-hearted Good Samaritan did what they thought was best and called Animal Control to help a stray cat they found. Two days later, a local resident walked into our shelter with concern in their eyes and hope in their heart—they had noticed their beloved outdoor companion, Smokey, was missing. As they looked through our current strays, their face lit up: Smokey was here!

This wasn’t just any cat. Smokey had been lovingly cared for and fed by this neighbor for quite some time. He wasn’t just a cat—they lovingly referred to him as their “emotional support community cat.” Smokey had been a comforting constant during tough times, and knowing he was safe brought immense relief and joy.

Smokey, an older gentleman, quickly became a shelter favorite with his affectionate nature. Before returning home, our compassionate veterinary team made sure he received the medical TLC he needed.

Today, he’s back in his familiar neighborhood, being spoiled and loved just as he deserves. This story is a perfect reminder that the Community Cat Program isn’t just about spay/neuter and return. It’s about connection. It’s about recognizing the deep bonds between people and the cats they care for, even if those cats live outdoors. To the hundreds of devoted community cat caretakers in our city: thank you. Your love and care do not go unnoticed. Outdoor cats can be loved cats, too.”
