Ninja is ‘spoiled beyond belief’ April 3, 2025

A dog in the car

I adopted a dog who was known at NHS as Turkish Delight, who is now Ninja, in April 2024. My life changed dramatically since that day.

I adopted a dog who was mostly deaf due to a severe ear infection her previous owners never treated. She was shy and reserved, yet she still came up to me and wanted love and to give kisses. When you would try to pet her, she tucked her tail like she was in trouble. But the second you stopped, her tail would wag so much. She would get so happy and want more pets and affection. I knew then she was my heart dog!

You wouldn’t even recognize this dog today from the time I met her in the shelter. She does have severe arthritis and chronic allergies, which both require monthly treatment. She also has to wear flaps to protect her extremely cauliflowered ears, so she has nothing to protect them, and she is constantly fighting off some type of infection, but I wouldn’t change anything in the world.

She is only two-years-old, but everyone believes she is at least eight or nine for how well she behaves. She still doesn’t have all her hearing back, but I’ve taught her sign language, which she picked up on almost immediately. She is my short, stumpy, chronically ill heart dog, which basically describes me just in human form.

This past year has been difficult, and she’s been there every single sad moment and every mental breakdown. She has just forced herself on me to kiss my face and lick my tears. She snores louder than my husband, and her favorite thing to do is what we call hog rolling because she snorts when she does it too.

She is just the goofiest, best mannered, snore master dog I’ve ever met. (She’s snoring right now as I type this out!)

The Nebraska Humane Society is amazing in what they do. They’ve been going for 150 years now, so they’re obviously doing something right. Thank you, Nebraska Humane Society for allowing me to bring home Turkish Delight (Ninja), and giving her the best life she deserves. You can tell she was treated poorly, but it’s all the more reason for her to be spoiled beyond belief now.
