‘Mookie is the reason I volunteer’ April 7, 2025
My boyfriend (now husband) and I waited our turn to meet a dog in December 2018. We walked the halls one last time and stopped in front of a sweet little pup’s kennel that we hadn’t noticed before.
We didn’t leave his side until we had the chance to meet him face to face. His name was Eggnog, and he was a skinny, snuggly 6-month-old who we immediately brought home and renamed Mookie.
Before Mookie, it never occurred to me that Pit Bull Terrier/Staffordshire Terrier mixes sometimes aren’t loved the same as any other breed. We didn’t think a thing of his breed until it became apparent through comments of others that it mattered to people. Mookie is the reason I volunteer with dogs, the reason I’m the last person to judge a dog and the first to have its back. I’m grateful to have met my best friend, my forever soulmate and my reminder of why volunteering is so important, even on the hard days. There are always other Mookie’s who need love and support while they wait for their forever’s, and no matter what they look like or what they’ve been through, there are people who are ready to give them a second chance at life.
