‘In her world, the sun was always shining’ July 27, 2025
We are sharing 150 stories in 150 days as we count down to our 150th birthday celebrations. Today’s story is from Nancy:
“In January 2010, we received an email from Denise Gurss, who knew we were volunteers with American Brittany Rescue (ABR.) She said that a blind Brittany female puppy had been left in the drop box and asked if ABR would take her in.
We named her CharLee and were supposed to put her on an ABR transport to a foster home. Instead, the sun that followed her everywhere came to live with us too. We adopted her, and it was the best decision ever.
She was so happy. She danced in the yard even if it was pitch black, it did not matter to her – in her world the sun was always shining. She had the house and yard mapped in her head. She did everything our sighted Brittanys did, including going to obedience school. We had to pay her a treat toll anytime we went into the laundry room.
She particularly enjoyed the ABR picnics held in Colorado and many of her cherished friends were made there. Even as she aged and mostly slept, she had a vibrancy when she was awake that lit up whatever room she was in.
We had 14 wonderful years with CharLee, and I am so grateful to Denise and NHS for contacting us about her.”
