‘I couldn’t go without being around dogs’ June 29, 2025
“After the passing of my dog, I wasn’t sure when or if I would ever be ready again to adopt another dog. The loss of a pet is an unexplainable feeling.
Being a big animal lover, I knew I couldn’t go without being around dogs. I decided to volunteer and help foster, but it didn’t work well with my work schedule. The Barks and Rec Program had more flexibility to help an animal in need. In late March 2024, I participated in the program. I completed the matchmaking survey not realizing at the time it would be the perfect pup match.
It was overwhelming taking home a lab mix, who I named Viggo, who is filled with excitement and joy. What was meant to be a weekend hang to take a break from the shelter turned into over a week as Viggo healed from kennel cough and surgery. Out of all the family dogs I owned, I’ve never had a dog smile at me, teeth and all. It was then I realized I didn’t have the heart to return this sweet pup to the shelter and made the decision to adopt last spring on April 12, 2024. So glad there is program like Barks and Rec!”
