“I grew up in a pet-free household, but I always dreamed of having a dog. When I moved to Omaha for college, I finally decided it was time. I went to the Nebraska Humane Society looking for a specific breed that would fit my lifestyle, but instead, I found Kane—or rather, Kane found me.

The moment he saw my roommate and me, he flopped onto his back, belly up, waiting for pets. I took him home on a foster-to-adopt basis, just to make sure his boundless energy wouldn’t completely destroy my house. By the next day, I knew he wasn’t going anywhere—I officially adopted him.

Kane is my soul dog. A certified lover boy. A big-time cuddler. He has a lot of nicknames, but our favorite? “Kaniac five finger combo, no slaw, extra toast, with a large lemonade.”

Having Kane for a year now, I can hardly remember life without him. And in gaining a home, he also gained a best friend—Peggy, my roommate’s rescue from Minnesota. From the moment they met, Kane and Peggy were inseparable, and their bond has only grown stronger. I’m incredibly grateful to NHS for bringing Kane into my life. He’s more than just a pet—he’s family.”
