‘I adore him, and he adores me’ July 20, 2025
“In August 2024, I happened across a little tricolor mutt in the NHS kennel while visiting the shelter for a volunteer task. I had just said goodbye to my heart dog, Quinn, earlier in the year, and I wasn’t certain I was ready for another dog, but Nico (NHS Jinx) stood out to me for some inexplicable reason.
He didn’t really look or act like Quinn, but something about him reminded me of her anyway. I decided to take him home for a trial visit, and the rest is history!
Nico is wicked smart and wildly energetic. He’s the sort of dog that gets returned without the proper training and biological fulfillment. He is stubborn and sensitive, biddable and independent. He has a bite history. His DNA test told us that he is a mix of high-drive breeds, so I’ve sought out activities and games that keep his mind and body engaged.
He’s a natural at hiking, swimming, nosework, box feeding, lure coursing (he’s got his BCAT title!), obedience training, canicross, agility, farm work, and just general romping around. As we approach Nico’s first gotcha day, I am so glad that I took a chance on him.
He’s got his quirks for sure, and training hasn’t been easy all the time, but he’s slowly making friends of all species and experiencing everything the world has to offer to an active little dog. I adore him, and he adores me, and we adore doing things together. He’s my shadow, just like Quinn was, and I like to think they would be thick as thieves if their stories had overlapped!🧡”
