‘Hunter healed a piece of me’ June 13, 2025
“My story with the Nebraska Humane Society started in July 2000 when I adopted the first dog I ever had in my life. His NHS name was Hunter and we kept the name. He was a 6-month-old yellow lab who was barking non-stop and jumping around in his kennel the whole time we were there.
My husband wasn’t convinced, but something about his spirit and personality spoke to me, and we brought Hunter home to our family. We were struggling with infertility and Hunter healed a piece of me and became our surrogate child. When we later had two children, he was so patient and loving with both of them. He was my heart dog.
We immediately began to support NHS monetarily, but also by adopting another cat and 3 more dogs. We currently have 4 dogs (3 NHS dogs) and because of the positive experience we had at NHS, I began volunteering there in 2021 as a Canine Companion.
I have met so many good friends who have the passion and dedication that make volunteering there such a positive experience. I am so glad to have been a small part of NHS. It has forever changed who I am.”
