Donating stocks that have appreciated in value allows donors to avoid paying capital gains taxes on the increase, while also providing a charitable deduction based on the stock's fair market value. This strategy not only maximizes the tax benefits for the donor but also enables charities to receive a larger financial contribution, enhancing their ability to fulfill their missions.

Bonds and Mutual Funds
Donating bonds can provide tax advantages, as donors may be able to deduct the fair market value of the bonds from their taxable income while avoiding capital gains taxes on any appreciation.
Donating mutual funds to NHS can provide significant tax advantages, as donors can avoid capital gains taxes on any appreciated shares while receiving a charitable deduction for the fund's current value.

Donor Advised Funds
Donating through a donor-advised fund (DAF) offers individuals the flexibility to contribute assets and recommend grants to charities over time, allowing for strategic philanthropic planning. This approach also provides immediate tax benefits, as donors can claim a tax deduction in the year they contribute to the DAF, while still having the opportunity to support their chosen causes over time.

Qualified Charitable Distributions
Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) allow individuals aged 70½ and older to donate up to $100,000 directly from their individual retirement accounts (IRAs) to eligible charities without incurring income tax on the distribution. This can be a tax-efficient way to meet required minimum distributions (RMDs) while supporting NHS. Additionally, using QCDs can help lower taxable income, potentially reducing the impact on Medicare premiums and other tax liabilities.
Our partnership with FreeWill means we can also offer an easy way to make a gift a qualified charitable distribution.
Charitable Gift Annuities
A Charitable Gift Annuity funded with cash, appreciated securities or a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) is a planned gift that can provide a guaranteed lifetime income stream for you as well as giving you significant tax benefits now and in the future. In some situations, the donor can take an immediate tax deduction while the nonprofit can invest and grow the funds. When the donor passes or the annuity terms are up, the nonprofit keeps the leftover funds.

Donate a Vehicle
By donating your car, truck, boat, RV, trailer or other vehicle, you can help the animals that are in need of our help in any given year. Vehicle donations are eligible for a charitable tax deduction and are another way to support the Nebraska Humane Society's effort to save lives.
