Furrrst Friday benefits people and pets May 1, 2025
“Nebraska Humane Society reached out to the Omaha Public Library about hosting a reading event in July of 2022. The event, which became NHS’s monthly Furrrst Fridays, fosters young readers and educates attendees about the conditions and needs of animals at NHS.
We’ve seen participants of all ages, from babies to college students and senior citizens, devote a small segment of their time to reading stories out loud to pets in the shelter. People benefit in different ways; it provides some with a sense of volunteerism, can improve reading skills and confidence, and gives folks a unique reason to visit the shelter and become more familiar with NHS and OPL’s work.
For animals, it provides another rich socialization opportunity, and can temporarily ease some of the stress of being at a shelter. Staff have reported that our busier Furrrst Fridays have been some of the quietest in the kennels, a sign of happy, relaxed, safe pups.”
Thank you SO much to Elly and the Omaha Public Library. Furrrst Friday is one of our favorite things. If you’ve never stopped by, we highly recommend you do. Conveniently, the next Furrrst Friday is tomorrow, Friday, May 2. You can come any time between 3-6 p.m., don’t need to sign up and it’s free to attend.
