Get ready for the big day by reading details below.

Neron

Thank you for submitting a survey to meet your new best friend!

The shelter is open from noon-6 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on weekends. We operate on a first-come, first-served basis, so we suggest arriving as early in the day as you can.

Check out the information below to ensure your "Gotcha Day" goes flawlessly.

What to Know

  • Your adoption survey is stored for 90 days.
  • You must physically be at the shelter to get in line.
  • Did your pet of choice get adopted before you could make it? Don’t worry - stop by anyway, and we’ll find a match for you.
  • You will be able to meet two pets - so have a couple in mind!
  • Some pets need to meet all the family members in the home, including other dogs, so doublecheck their online bio to be sure. If you can’t all make it, let your adoption counselor know when you arrive, and we’ll work with you!
  • Need time to think on it? We offer “foster to adopt” for most dogs adopted to homes in Omaha and Sarpy County, meaning you can keep your dog for up to a week before signing the papers to ensure they are the right fit.
  • Expect to take your dog home the day you adopt (we’ll provide the collar and leash!)
  • We are located at 8929 Fort Street, Omaha, NE 68134
  • Are you a veteran? Ask about the Vets Get Pets program for a discounted adoption!

Diamond Dogs

If you are applying to adopt a Diamond Dog, you will only be contacted if you are determined to be a match for the dog(s) you selected and if they are still available. There is no guarantee that the dog(s) you request to meet will still be available at the time we review your application. Diamond Dogs are adopted by appointment only.

What to Bring

  • Legal form of ID (license, military, state, etc.)
  • Any family or other dogs you want to meet the dog you are adopting.
  • Some dogs require a family or dog intro - doublecheck their online bio ahead of time

Common Adoption Day Terms

  • "Pick your price" - that means you, the adopter, determine the adoption fee
  • "Diamond dog" - Often fearful or rowdy dogs who need a little more polish to shine
  • "Foster to Adopt" - Want to adopt but not 100% certain? We get it - it's a big life decision. Foster to adopt gives a chance for you to "test drive" the adoption for up to a week, and it's available to people adopting in Omaha and Sarpy County.
  • "Bonded" - This means dogs must be adopted together because they are codependent and give each other joy/confidence.

After Adopting

  • Get a photo in front of our adoption banner and tag us in it!

  • Join our NHS Alumni Facebook group
  • Send us pics and updates as often as you'd like! We love to see them!

We bet you can’t wait to meet your new best friend, and we can’t wait to introduce you!

Thank you,
