‘A new way of life for us’ May 19, 2025
“I didn’t want a dog. I wasn’t an animal person. I told my husband, who DID want a dog, that he could have a dog when he retired (49 at the time). In other words…’no.’
Fast forward Saturday morning, May 2, 2015. Watching the local news, he yells ‘Kris come here – this is our dog!’ Yeah right, I had heard that before. I went to check it out, and I will never forget what he said as he showed me this HUGE, slobbery St Bernard on Pet of the Week. ‘Kris, she is old and huge. No one will want her!’
I couldn’t get her out of my head. That night as we sat out on the deck I said I thought maybe we should go meet Sequoia. We brought her home the next day.
Now, almost 10 years later, 3 St Bernards, 2 Newfies, 1 boxer mix, and 5 ½ years as an NHS dog walker – this day and this newscast literally was pivotal in my life. I tell everyone this story. We obviously considered it so pivotal I chased down the segment from KETV!
We only had Sequoia for about 2 ½ years before we lost her to osteosarcoma, but she started a new way of life for us. I could go on and on about all of our girls, but we all can, can’t we? I’m grateful as a volunteer that I get to love so many dogs other than my own, and yes I still cry when they leave…but happy cries, not bridge cries, which is refreshing!
Plus we often get to keep tabs on them on the NHS Alumni page! Thanks NHS, Pam and KETV for putting Sequoia on that edition of Pet of the Week! I can’t imagine life without seeing that clip.
And my last shameless plug…if you are reading these…you too love the animals. We could ALWAYS use more volunteer friends to help walk the dogs, take care of the cats and a variety of other tasks!! Please consider being part of the answer! Trust me…you won’t regret it!”
